L’installation Xeno-geo-bio-medialogics concerne la « matérialité toxique » de l’Anthropocène. Cet état particulier de la matière géologique tient à l’exploitation de la nature par l’humain dans des systèmes de forages miniers et de traitements des roches pour l’extraction des matières premières, produisant des déchets industriels bien spécifiques qui contaminent l’espace public et détruisent des écosystèmes. Les deux cas d’études se focalisent sur les conséquences environnementales de l’industrie aluminière et des métaux lourds qui en résultent. Ainsi, l’installation comprend divers types d’échantillons (sol, eau, terre, mousse) ainsi que des outils qui tentent une lecture de ceux-ci. Suivant des protocoles tels que l’échantillonnage de l’eau et du sol, la mise en culture de bactéries, la chromatographie, ce mini-laboratoire évolutif permet à la matière biologique et géologique d’interagir, d’interférer et de remettre en question les fondements de notre notion de matérialité et de pollution en questionnant les outils de captation, d’analyse et leur représentation. Leurs échantillons vont servir de base d’analyse et de discussion pour la table ronde et pour les interventions de Jacques Falquet, Sachiko Hirosue et Oliver Keller. Ils seront également « chromatographiés » par Emanuela Ascari.

Mesurer : une interrogation ludique sur notre rapport à la démarche scientifique
avec Jacques Falquet
Quelques instruments de mesure serviront de fil conducteur nous permettant de tester « notre rapport » aux données quantitatives. Sans oublier la méthodologie, c’est bien d’interprétation et de ressenti dont il sera surtout question. En filigrane, il s’agira de confronter nos façons de (nous) persuader, de croire ou de douter. Une partie de ping-pong épistémologique sans autre prétention que de s’étonner avec plaisir de nos difficultés avec « la réalité de la réalité ».

En tant que moyen technologique puissant apparu après les révolutions industrielles et numériques, l’accomplissement et le design de solutions pour la biologie et la biotechnologie doivent refléter une diversité de voix pour être persuasifs dans notre société et ne doivent donc pas être guidés que par les préoccupations de quelques-un-e-s. Avec les biosenseurs comme point de départ, nous allons découvrir les méthodes de production et de partage de connaissances transdisciplinaires, communautaires et horizontales.

Radioactif… ? Feedback audiovisuel en temps réel des objets du quotidien
avec Oliver Keller
L’outil iPadPix, élaboré par Oliver Keller, est un système de détection de radioactivité implémenté sur un iPad. Grâce à un détecteur de pixels développé au CERN et de feedback audio et visuel en temps réel, il offre certains avantages au compteur Geiger-Müller traditionnel. Il permet ainsi d’appréhender la radioactivité naturelle et artificielle de notre environnement quotidien de façon particulièrement visuelle et novatrice. Son intervention consistera en la présentation du iPadPix par une démonstration sur des objets à divers taux de radioactivité et un « scannage » de certains échantillons des sites contaminés aux métaux lourds récoltés par Vanessa Lorenzo et Raphaëlle Mueller pour en détecter l’éventuelle charge radioactive.

Discussion avec les intervenant-e-s Jacques Falquet, Sachiko Hirosue et Oliver Keller qui nous permettra de questionner les fondements de notre notion de matérialité toxique dans le contexte de l’Anthropocène.

Moment pour permettre à d’autres formes d’expression naturelles et hybrides d’habiter cet espace de réflexion. En interagissant avec la radioactivité et les organismes vivants, les artistes transforment les données en son et musique, créant ainsi une composition sonore expérimentale en direct.

The installation entitled Xeno-geo-bio-medialogics concerns the “toxic materiality” of the Anthropocene. This particular state of geological matter is the result of the humans’ exploitation of nature through mining systems and treatments of rock for extraction of raw materials, thus generating specific industrial waste which contaminates the public space and destroys ecosystems. The two cases studied by the artists focus on the environmental consequences of aluminium and heavy metals industries. The installation comprises a variety of samples (ground, water, earth, moss), as well as tools to be used for their readings. Following protocols such as water and ground sampling, bacteria culturing, chromatography, this evolving mini-laboratory allows for biological and geological matter to interact, interfere with and interrogate the foundations of our notions of materiality and pollution by questioning the very tools of capture, analysis and their representations. Their samples will form the basis of analysis and discussion for the round table and for interventions by Jacques Falquet, Sachiko Hirosue and Oliver Keller. They will also be “chromatographed” by Emanuela Ascari.

Measuring: A Playful Interrogation of Our Relationship to the Scientific Approach
with Jacques Falquet
A few measuring tools will provide the read thread for this discussion and allow us to test our relationship to quantitative data. We will address questions of interpretation and feeling, as well as methodology. Implicitly, we are also going to confront our ways of persuading (ourselves), of believing and/or of doubting. This participatory discussion is conceived as an epistemological ping-pong game that will pleasantly surprise us with respect to our difficulties of dealing with “reality”.

Because they are powerful technological tools that appeared after industrial and numerical revolutions, the accomplishments and designs of solutions for biology and biotechnology must reflect a diversity of voices in order to be persuasive in our society and, therefore, must not be guided by preoccupations of the select few. Taking biosensors as a point of departure, we will discover production methods and sharing of transdisciplinary, communal and horizontal knowledge.

Radioactive…? Real Time Audiovisual Feedback of Everyday Objects
with Oliver Keller
The iPadPix tool elaborated by Oliver Keller, is a system of detection of radioactivity implemented on an iPad. Thanks to the pixel detector developed at CERN and the audio and visual feedback in real time, it offers advantages to the more traditional Geiger-Müller counter and allows to perceive natural and artificial radioactivity of our daily environment in a particularly visual and innovative way. His intervention will consist of a presentation of the iPadPix that will demonstrate its use on objects with different levels of radioactivity and a “scan” for radioactivity of selected samples gathered by Vanessa Lorenzo and Raphaëlle Mueller from sites contaminated by heavy metals.
