TRAUMA un projet de VINCENT CALMEL
Le 22 mars 2010, Vincent Calmel est victime d’un accident de moto. Placé sous coma artificiel, il découvre à son réveil que la partie osseuse droite de son visage a été disloquée par l’impact. Il est défiguré. Les chirurgiens réussissent à recomposer toute la structure fracturée en lui greffant une armature en titane. Face à ce nouveau reflet imposé, Vincent s’interroge sur ce qui rend un visage significativement réel. Si chaque visage est unique, possédant sa propre vérité sur ce qui le rend singulier, peut-on définir cette vérité selon des règles et des valeurs simplement morphologiques ? A sa sortie d’hôpital, Vincent demande à une quinzaine d’amies proches d’être photographiées sous une lumière clinique, devant un fond de teinte chair. Grâce à la palette graphique de l’ordinateur, ces visages sont alors morcelés et mélangés entre eux. Les yeux de l’une sont désormais placés sur le visage d’une autre, la mâchoire est intervertie, le nez est remplacé, la bouche est modifiée. A partir de visages réels, le photographe compose des visages inédits, virtuels, comme autant de tentatives de composer de nouvelles identités bien réelles.
La post-production a été réalisée en collaboration avec Karim Nassar.

Le photographe Vincent Calmel (*1972) a été séléctionné au Swiss Press Photo en 1999 et 2000 et a reçu la distinction Visa d’or au Festival de Perpignan pour son travail sur le Kosovo en 2001. Ses œuvres ont été montrées en Suisse et à l’étranger pour Voies Off d’Arles en 2003, HKO5 à la Galerie des Halles de l’Île en 2007, et à Arts Futura, au Bal des Créateurs à Geneva entre autres. Vincent Calmel vit et travaille à Genève.

On March 22nd 2010, Vincent Calmel was involved in a life threatening motorbike accident. When Vincent came round, he was told he was not in a life threatening condition but that the impact had dislocated his facial bone structure. The right side of Vincent’s skull was shattered causing massive disfigurement to his face. The surgeons were quick to react, understanding the levels of psychological and physical trauma Vincent would be suffering, they set up an incredible protocol, entirely guided by cutting-edge facial reconstruction computer-based technologies. An unforeseen experience begins, thus to learn how to live with an unfamiliar face and the omnipresence of continuous pain. The fight is no longer physical but psychological. It is now a question of taming this new face, making it his once again. This new imposed reflection brings a new set of questions on what makes a face significantly real. If every face is unique, holding it’s own truth on what makes it so singular, can it be defined by a set of morphological rules and values?
When Vincent was discharged from the hospital, he requested to photograph fifteen of his closest female friends. They all agreed to be photographed in a particular setting with a very clinical lighting standing in front of a specific pantone backdrop, referred to in photo retouching as one of the skin tone pantones. Using his computer’s retouching tools, the elements of each face are taken apart and rearranged on a blank canvas to create new identities. The eyes of one are now paired with the lips of another and the jaw line of a third.
