Le mardi 7 juin, le Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève organise le lancement du livre et une conversation sur la transition entre documenta 14 et documenta 15 dans le cadre de la publication de THE CONTINUUM WAS PERFORMED IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER de Pierre Bal-Blanc.
Cette table ronde réunira Andrea Linnenkohl et Ayşe Güleç de l’équipe curatoriale de documenta 15, en conversation avec Pierre Bal-Blanc, curateur de la documenta 14, et Andrea Bellini, directeur du Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève.
Andrea Bellini, qui a écrit la préface de cette publication, modèrera la conversation et explorera les différentes contributions au livre. Alors que la documenta 15 ouvrira au mois de juin, cette conversation est aussi une excellente opportunité de comprendre la transition entre les deux documenta et d’introduire cette nouvelle édition organisée sous la direction artistique du collectif indonésien ruangrupa.
En 2017, Adam Szymczyk est chargé de tenir la plus importante exposition d’art contemporain au monde. Szymczyk et son équipe déplacent l’exposition en dehors des limites de Cassel, à Athènes. Leur approche curatoriale amène l’exposition à un point de rupture sans précédent, en particulier dans sa relation aux institutions et à la politique.
Dans ce livre, publié cinq ans après l’exposition, Pierre Bal-Blanc propose une relecture complète et lucide de ce passage historique, à la lumière du « scandale ». Ce long et profond essai est une réflexion a posteriori bien articulée, qui retrace l’évènement d’un point de vue critique. À la manière d’un journal, Bal-Blanc témoigne de son expérience directe, bouleversant ainsi la perspective dominante et offrant une vision nouvelle et personnelle non seulement des choix artistiques, mais également des dynamiques socio-politiques qui en ont résulté.
Le livre se termine par une conversation approfondie et stimulante entre Adam Szymczyk et Dorota Sajewska. Dans l’ensemble, il offre la possibilité d’étudier et de comprendre le phénomène extraordinaire qu’est la documenta, à travers les voix de ceux qui sont restés trop longtemps silencieux dans le bruyant chaos médiatique qui a accompagné les événements. Ce livre est donc une invitation à relire les événements sous un jour nouveau et à réfléchir aux mérites et aux limites de l’une des éditions les plus controversées et les plus stimulantes de la documenta.

On Tuesday June 7, the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève will host a book launch and a panel conversation about the transition from documenta 14 to documenta fifteen, in the context of the publication of THE CONTINUUM WAS PERFORMED IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER by Pierre Bal-Blanc.
The panel conversation will reunite Andrea Linnenkohl and Ayşe Güleç from the documenta fifteen curatorial team, in conversation with Pierre Bal-Blanc, curator of documenta 14, and Andrea Bellini, director of the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève.
Andrea Bellini, who wrote the preface of this book, will moderate the conversation and explore the different contributions to the book. With documenta fifteen due to open this June, the panel discussion is also a great opportunity to understand the transition from the previous documenta 14 to the forthcoming edition organized under the artistic direction of the Indonesian collective ruangrupa.
In 2017, Adam Szymczyk was asked to open the most important contemporary art exhibition in the world. Szymczyk and his team moved the exhibition outside the borders of Kassel, to Athens. Their curatorial approach pushed the exhibition to new limits, especially in institutional and political terms.
In this book, published five years after the exhibition, Pierre Bal-Blanc looks back at that historical moment in the light of its “scandal.” The long, in-depth essay is a detailed recollection and reflection that considers the events from a critical perspective. As in a diary, Bal-Blanc recounts his personal experiences in overturning the dominant perspective, offering readers a new and personal vision not only of the artistic choices made, but also of the political and social dynamics that they engendered.
The book concludes with an extensive and thought-provoking conversation between Adam Szymczyk and Dorota Sajewska. Overall, the publication offers the possibility to study and understand the extraordinary phenomenon that is documenta, through the voices of those who for too long remained silent in the noisy media chaos that accompanied the events. The book is therefore an invitation to reread the events in a different light and reflect on the merits and limits of one of the most controversial and stimulating editions of documenta ever held.
