Steppe (released on The Netherlands' Norwegianism Records in 2018) is an unlikely free jazz drone collaboration between Canadian guitarist Eric Quach (thisquietarmy) and Belgian drummer Tom Malmendier, fueled by nomadic multi-continental travel stories through cold windy landscapes and warm improbable meetings through the interconnected underground arts scene.

Tom Malmendier is a self-taught, experimental free-jazz Belgian drummer. His unique, improvised story-telling drum style stems from focusing on the intrinsic sound of percussion - always prioritizing innovation and expression over precise technique, which grows constantly as he interacts with a large number of diverse and creative musicians that he meets on his path, as part of L'Oeil Collective - a prolific collective of improv musicians based in Liège. He is also quite active in several bands and projects with musicians such as Farida Amadou (Cocaine Piss) & Phil Maggi (Ultraphallus). In the drone/noise scene, he has performed and collaborated with the likes of Suzuki Junzo, Aidan Baker, Dirk Serries & thisquietarmy.

THISQUIETARMY is the music project of Montreal-based artist Eric Quach, a pioneer of the Canadian experimental music scene. Revolving around improvised guitar drone and by combining textural & structural elements of ambient/noise, electronic/shoegaze, post-punk/krautrock, black/doom metal, thisquietarmy creates a wide range of dynamic soundscapes which oscillates between repetitive dreamy minimalism, multi-layered noise textures and electronic industrial beats.

Since 2005, thisquietarmy has put out close to 50 releases on more than 30 different labels such as Consouling Sounds, Denovali Records, Aurora Borealis, Alien8 Recordings, Shelter Press & three:four Records. His vast discography also includes collaborations with Aidan Baker (Nadja), Scott Cortez (loveliescrushing), André Foisy (Locrian), Labirinto, Monarch, Noveller, Dirk Serries, Syndrome (Amenra), USA Out of Vietnam, Year Of No Light & Yellow6, and has co-founded bands such as Berlin-based space rock collective Hypnodrone Ensemble (Est. 2014) & Montreal defunct post-shoegazer band Destroyalldreamers (2002-2007). He also collaborates live with Godspeed You! Black Emperor's drummer Aidan Girt as Some Became Hollow Tubes (Est. 2019), and their 16mm filmmaker Philippe Leonard as an A/V duo Alchemic Rites (Est. 2016).

With a large body of work and close to 600 live performances in 40 countries, including performances at esteemed festivals such as Drone Activity in Progress for Red Bull Music Academy (Montreal), Nemo Digital Arts Biennale (France), Incubate Festival (Netherlands), Le Guess Who?
