What constitutes true revolution? If one political system is replaced with another, without an accompanying overthrow of structural social and cultural biases and inequities, is it really a revolution at all? In 2018, these questions are more important than ever, since leftists around the world see, very clearly, how decades of unfettered worldwide capitalist oligarchy are now morphing inexorably into fascism and toward a breaking point -- and an opportunity for true change. But there is a danger that the hashtag activism of #resist, #metoo, and #balancetonporc will only function as distractions from doing the real and difficult work of dismantling the classist, racist, and misogynist underpinnings of contemporary society and producing substantive change. And a large component of doing this is not constantly reacting to the rules of the game defined and controlled by the hegemony, but by actively creating the culture and society we want to exist. American indie pioneer Lizzie Borden's 1983 film, "Born in Flames" -- a radical, DIY, leftist, feminist, sci-fi, queer-punk masterpiece -- addresses these questions with a fierceness and clarity that couldn't be more timely in 2018. With a cameo acting appearance by Kathryn Bigelow.
