Saint Vitus is a historical figure that actually existed. We can find historical traces referring to meetings or groups of people that used to give themselves to dances free of any social convention, in the limits of the shamanistic trance. Terrified by those crazy dancers (some of them would pass away from dancing), the Christians invoked Saint Guy (Saint Vitus in Latin) to protect the dancers. With the improvement of science, we can affirm today that these dancers with uncontrollable movements had to absorb – involuntarily – “l’ergot de seigle” (a kind of mushroom naturally developed from cereals, as well as the active principle of LSD).
